Wastewater Treatment

Clean Water is our most important resource and the basis for a healthy environment. It is therefore a major task of the Erftverband to secure the water resources through a sustainable water management and thorough sewage Treatment.
The purification of waste water is subject to stringent requirements. These apply not only for sewage treatment plants, but also for the discharge of rainwater into rivers and streams.

Within the catchment area of the River Erft, the Erftverband operates 39 high-performance sewage treatment plants with a capacity to serve 1.2 million population equivalents. This corresponds to the sewage produced by 750,000 inhabitants plus industry located in the Erft region.

Sewage treatment comprises various stages and different techniques, depending on the location. To meet the high quality requirements for treated wastewater, wastewater is cleaned mechanically and biologically. The latest and most efficient sewage treatment technique is ultra-filtration. The Erftverband was not only heavily involved in its development but also first in Europe to promote its application. Altogether, the Erftverband operates three sewage treatment plants featuring ultra-filtration. In addition, the Erftverband operates numerous storm water basins, pumping stations, connecting sewers and three municipal sewage systems.
